Westhaven Beach is a small, sandy beach surrounded by rocks, which protect it from the strongest currents, making it a good place for bathing in the relatively shallow water. The beach is also home to many rock pools, which are perfect for exploring signs of marine wildlife, an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
The beach is located on the western edge of the town of Carnoustie, and there is a small car park at the end of East Row, a short walk from the beach. Additional parking can be found in the centre of Carnoustie, about half a mile from the beach. The town of Carnoustie offers many amenities, including shops, places to eat, and places to stay. A railway station with regular services to Dundee is also available.
Carnoustie was once a very popular tourist destination, but it declined as cheaper international holidays became available. However, it has successfully reinvented itself as a golf resort. The area to the south of the beach is used by the military for firing ranges.
