Weston-super-Mare is an established seaside resort with a long history as a Victorian English seaside holiday destination. The main beach area lies south of The Grand Pier and is approximately two kilometres wide. The beach is backed by a promenade and offers stunning views across Weston Bay towards Wales and south towards Exmoor.
The main beach area is a popular spot for sunbathing, building sandcastles, and traditional Great British seaside activities during the summer season. The Uphill Sands section of the beach is partitioned off for kitesurfing and other watersports. Visitors can also stroll or cycle along the promenade, which runs along the 2-mile stretch between Royal Sands and Marine Lake.
The Bristol Channel has a tidal range of 14.5 metres, making it the second highest in the world. When the tide is in, the water can come all the way up to the pier. However, at low tide, a wide expanse of dangerous mudflats are exposed, and visitors must not attempt to reach the sea. It is recommended to check tide times in advance if planning a dip in the sea.
Dogs are not allowed on the section of beach between The Grand Pier and Royal Sands from the start of May until the end of September, but are welcome at other times of year. The town of Weston-super-Mare itself is only a short walk away, offering numerous tourist attractions, including a helicopter museum, an aquarium, and a variety of seaside rides and amusements.
The Grand Pier, which was completely destroyed by fire in 2008 and re-opened to the public in October 2010, is the main attraction with world-class rides and attractions. Visitors can also visit the seaquarium or try out the water sports available, including kite surfing, jet skiing, windsurfing, and sailing.
