Cuckmere Haven Beach is situated on the East Sussex coast, where the coastline is dominated by cliffs that are constantly changing due to erosion. The pebble beach is quiet and secluded, and is located at the mouth of the meandering Cuckmere river.
The beach is famous for its breathtaking views of the Seven Sisters cliffs, a row of iconic white chalk cliffs that rise high above the beach. The Cuckmere River runs through the beach, and it is possible to cross the river at low tide by wading through the shallow water. At high tide, visitors can cross the river using a bridge near the Cuckmere Inn. The beach is also home to a row of four coastguard cottages, built shortly after the foundation of the National Coastguard Service in 1822. However, these cottages are currently under threat from erosion, with the cliffs having moved over 30 metres closer than they originally were.
Cuckmere Haven Beach is a popular spot for anglers, with the river mouth providing rich pickings. The area is also abundant with wildlife, making it a great destination for nature lovers and birdwatchers. The Seven Sisters Country Park, which backs onto the beach, offers long walks and opportunities to observe a wide variety of wildlife.
The beach has a rich history, having been used as a location for numerous films, including Harry Potter and Robin Hood. It was also commonly used by smugglers in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Today, the beach is dog-friendly all year round, and visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including walking, birdwatching, and fishing.
There is a café/restaurant nearby, where visitors can grab a bite to eat or a drink. However, hours of operation can vary, so it's worth checking before visiting.
Cuckmere Haven Beach is on the Sussex Heritage Coast.
