The bay is situated on the north Wales coastline, to the east of Rhos Point, approximately 10 kilometres from the Great Orme headland. The beach is long and sandy, with a concrete promenade to the rear.
Colwyn Bay is one of North Wales’ classic Victorian seaside resorts. Still popular, it has however lost some of its sparkle over the years. The good news though is this is a resort that is working hard to reinvent itself and recreate that heyday. In recent years the beachfront at Colwyn Bay has been transformed with the multimillion pound Porth Eirias (‘Park by the sea’) waterside development. This features a watersports centre, shops and restaurant.
The beach itself is the whole reason the resort exists in the first place. A generous stretch of fine golden sand backed by a seawall and promenade. As you would expect from a Blue Flag beach there are no shortage of facilities along the beachfront or in the town, which is only a few minutes walk away. Recently the original Victoria Pier, which dated back to the turn of the century, has been partly rebuilt in a much simpler, shorter form. The new pier retains much of the ornate metalwork of the old one, and it is hope that at some point in the future it will be further extended.
Colwyn Bay is a great place for watersports and fishing, as well as having coastal paths for cycling and walking. There are also separate slipways situated along the promenade for fishing, sailing, and jet skiing. Local attractions include Eirias park, the Welsh Mountain zoo, and Dinosaur World. The wide promenade has a well-maintained cycle path and is dog friendly all year, but restricted from 1st May and 30th September between the Victoria Pier and the entrance to Eirias Park.
