Abergele Pensarn Beach is a rural and unspoilt beach, suitable for quiet walks with fantastic seascapes, including the Great Orme. The beach is located opposite the town of Pensarn, within a long sandy stretch of beach, which extends over 8 kilometres, from Kinmel Bay to Llanddulas. The bathing water has a large tidal range, and is gently sloping from the low tide mark to the high tide pebbled area.
The shingle beach of Pensarn is situated in front of the town of Abergele. A promenade runs along much of the beachfront and Pensarn is also located on the Wales Coastal Path, meaning that walkers of all abilities can enjoy the sea views. The area is also serviced by Cycle Route 5, which skirts along the beach and allows visitors to take in the seascapes that stretch to the Great Orme.
There are a good range of facilities along the seafront, including shops, eateries, and a range of local pubs. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including kayaking, windsurfing, and walking along the Wales Coastal Path. The promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a bike ride.
Part of the beach was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1977, as it is a fine example of a vegetated shingle bank. Several plants that are not found elsewhere in Wales can be seen here, such as Ray’s knotgrass, Sea kale, and Sea radish.
Pensarn Beach is actually home to some rare plants and wildlife, which makes it quite special. The beach is also famous for being the place where Captain Matthew Webb prepared for his historic swim of the English Channel in 1875.
The beach is dog friendly all year, but restricted from 1st May and 30th September between the embedded wooden posts by the café and the embedded concrete posts at the western end of the promenade.
Abergele Pensarn Beach is adjacent to the Wales Coast Path.
