The beach is situated approximately 1.5 kilometres north east of the River Clwyd, within a long sandy stretch of beach extending over 2.5 kilometres from the Clwyd Estuary to Splash Point. The beach features a large tidal range and a gentle slope from the low tide mark towards the high tide area, which is bordered by a promenade.
Until its development as a resort in the 1880s, Rhyl was a small collection of fishermen's cottages. The town's growth brought hotels, a promenade, and seaside entertainment, attracting visitors from industrial areas in Wales, northern England, and the Midlands. Although Rhyl's heyday has passed, the town still offers a range of attractions and activities for visitors.
The main beach at Rhyl is a vast expanse of sand stretching for around 2 miles from the Clwyd Estuary to Splash Point. The beach becomes even larger as the tide goes out, sometimes requiring a walk of nearly half a mile to reach the sea. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including donkey rides, seafront amusement arcades, and beachside developments such as the SeaQuarium and the Sun Centre.
Rhyl Central Beach is a popular seaside resort with safe bathing in the sea and plenty of family-friendly activities. Attractions include the Rhyl SeaQuarium, the Pavilion Theatre, and the beachfront Rhyl Children's Village. The Vue Cinema offers an alternative on rainy days. During the holiday season, lifeguards are on duty, and the RNLI Rhyl Lifeboat Station and Life Lifeguard station provide additional support.
The beach has various accommodation options, including a seafront Premier Inn and Travelodge, as well as smaller hotels and B&Bs nearby. Visitors can also explore the nearby Eisteddfod Standing Stones and Rhyl East beach, which is dog-friendly during the winter months but has restricted access from May to September.
