Abercastle Beach sits on the north-west Pembrokeshire coast, which is often compared to Devon or Cornwall thanks to its picturesque scenery. The beach here is set in a sheltered cove and consists of sand mixed with shingle. The beach at Abercastle has a somewhat laid back atmosphere these days but was once known as Cwm Badau which means the “Bay of Boats”. In those days it was an active trading port with slate, stone, corn, coal, and oats all shipped from the area.
Some points to look out for here include the bollards that date from the days of the sailing ships and a limekiln. Close to the harbour at Abercastle Beach is Ynys y Castell which means Castle Island. There is also a wealth of flora and fauna here and if you look offshore you may even see seals and dolphins that come into the bay in search of food.
Abercastle Beach on the North Pembrokeshire Coast is a great spot to visit. Also known as Cwm Badau or Bay of Boats, this sheltered harbour was once a busy trading hub. Today most of the boats are for pleasure and you will see them dotted along the narrow natural harbour. The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path wraps its way around the beach along the cliffs. Abercastle beach is ideal for Kayaking, fishing and sailing, with the harbour managed by the Abercastle Boat Owners Association. A little further along the cliffs is Carreg Samson a 5,000 year old Neolithic burial chamber which overlooks the harbour. There are a number of cottages in the area and some holiday accommodation, and just behind the beach is a beautiful woodland and campsite.
Abercastle Beach is adjacent to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the Wales Coast Path.
