Whitesands Beach, also known as Porthmawr, is a long strip of white sand that stretches northwards towards St. David's Head. The beach is situated in a picturesque area, with open fields and meadows sloping down from the rambling hills behind it, and the imposing craggy hill, Carn Llidi, providing good walking opportunities.
The beach is renowned for its excellent surfing conditions, making it one of the best spots for surfing on the Welsh coast. In addition to surfing, visitors can also enjoy swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and kite surfing in the waters around Whitesands Beach. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status, ensuring a good range of facilities, including a cafe, toilets, and lifeguards on patrol during the summer months.
The scenery surrounding Whitesands Beach is stunning, with a wide range of flora and fauna on show. The cliffs that surround the beach are covered in bluebells, sea campion, thrift, and golden gorse, and visitors can spot seagulls and gannets flying overhead. The beach is also steeped in history, with the ruins of a 6th-century chapel for sailors dedicated to St. Patrick located at the northern end of the beach.
Whitesands Bay is a popular destination for families during the holidays, with plenty of beach activities, surf hire, and stand-up paddleboarding available. However, dogs are restricted on the beach from May to September. Visitors can enjoy walks along the coastal path, and there are parking and cafe facilities directly behind the beach, as well as camping and holiday cottages nearby.
The nearby city of St David's, Britain's smallest city, is steeped in history and features a superb 12th-century cathedral with elaborately carved oak ceilings, a stone tower, and fine stained-glass windows. The isolated mountain of Carn Llidi offers breathtaking views across the county for those energetic enough to climb to the top.
Whitesands Beach is adjacent to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the Wales Coast Path.
