Westcliff Beach is a long sandy/shingle beach in the centre of Southend-on Sea, backed by a long esplanade. The beach has a shallow profile and at high water the sea level can flood over the entire beach and lap against the esplanade wall. The beach is a mix of sand and shingle, interspersed with groynes. At high tide the beach can be entirely submerged, whereas at low tide a large expanse of wet sand and mud is exposed.
The beach is used for bathing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and walking. There are several refreshment options available, including Toulouse and The Beach Hut, which are located right on the beach. Visitors can also sample refreshments at Rossi’s Ice Cream Emporium. A short walk from the beach is a 24-hour casino and The Cliffs Pavilion, a theatre offering over 300 live performances each year.
Westcliff Beach is located in Westcliff-on-Sea, a suburb of Southend-on-Sea in Essex. The beach is bordered by the bustling Southend to the east and the charming Old Leigh to the west. It is easily accessible from the town centre and is adjacent to the famous Southend Pier.
Dogs are not permitted on the beach from the start of May to the end of September. The beach offers several facilities, including cafés, restaurants, public toilets, and deckchair hire.
Southend has all the amusements and entertainments that you would expect from an established seaside resort town and also boasts the longest pleasure pier in the world. There are plenty of places to eat, drink, and shop to be found close to the beach.
