West Mersea Beach is situated on Mersea Island, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway that is partially submerged at high tide. The beach itself is a mix of sand and pebbles, backed by grassland and lined with colourful beach huts that offer stunning views over the Blackwater estuary.
The south-facing beach looks out over the Blackwater Estuary and offers a range of activities for visitors, including sunbathing, picnicking, and water sports such as stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing. The Mersea Island Watersports centre provides high-quality rentals and lessons for those looking to try their hand at a new sport. Visitors can also try their luck at crabbing off one of the jetties or cast a line from the shore for fishing.
The beach is lined with beach huts, including those available for rent along Victoria Esplanade, which offer a convenient place to store belongings, change, or simply relax in the shade. While there are no lifeguards on duty, the beach is generally considered a safe place to swim and enjoy water activities. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, although it is recommended to keep them on a lead during busy summer months.
Visitors can also explore the nearby West Mersea Yacht Club, a popular yachting hotspot with busy boatyards and an annual regatta in August.
