The beach at Dymchurch stretches for approximately 3 miles along the Kent coast and is backed by a new, improved sea wall built in 2011 at a cost of £60 million. The sea wall is wide enough to allow pedestrians to walk all along the beach between Hythe Military Rifle Range and St Mary’s Bay. The beach itself is a mix of sand and shingle, with a wide expanse of golden sand that opens up at low tide, making it perfect for beach games, paddling, and building sandcastles.
The village of Dymchurch sits just behind the seawall, offering a range of facilities including cafés, amusements, pubs, and small shops. Visitors can enjoy donkey rides, organised on Dymchurch Beach in the holiday season, and take a ride on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch narrow gauge railway, which runs between Hythe and Dungeness. The beach is also a great spot for swimming, kite-surfing, and horse riding during the winter months.
A Martello Tower (number 23), built in the early 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars, stands overlooking the beach, offering stunning views of the coastline. The tower is now owned by English Heritage and visits can be arranged by prior appointment.
The beach has a large promenade running along the back, ideal for walking, scooting, or enjoying the sea views. There is plenty of parking nearby, with a decent-sized pay-and-display car park close to the beach and more spaces dotted around the village. Public toilets are available, and everything is generally accessible, with ramps and level areas along the promenade. In 2024, Dymchurch beach received a Seaside Award from Keep Britain Tidy; however, concerns over water quality have led to a ‘no swim’ warning in 2025.
Dogs are allowed on Dymchurch Beach, but with some restrictions. From 1st May to 30th September, dogs are not permitted on the main beach area near the centre of the village between 10am and 6pm. Outside of those times, and in the quieter stretches to either side of the main beach, dogs are usually allowed.
Dymchurch Martello Tower Beach is adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk.
