Dymchurch North Beach is a straight beach adjacent to Romney Marsh, comprising a mix of sand and shingle. The beach has a wide concrete footway and a low sea wall. At low tide, the sand stretches out approximately half a mile, and the Romney to Dymchurch steam railway runs past the beach. Visitors can find refreshments further south along the beach.
The beach forms part of a long stretch of sand and shingle backed by a wide sea-wall, which it is possible to walk along. As you head north-east, the beach becomes quite narrow. Martello Tower (number 24) overlooks this stretch of the beach, which was once part of the military defences built to defend the south coast from a possible Napoleonic invasion. Today, this tower has been converted for use as a private residence.
The beach is a popular spot for families, with plenty of things to do both on the beach and in the village. When the tide goes out, the beach opens up wide, providing ample space for beach games, paddling, building sandcastles, or simply relaxing. The village of Dymchurch sits just behind the seawall, offering cafés, amusements, pubs, and small shops.
The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, a steam railway that has been delighting visitors since the 1920s, also stops in the village. The railway runs along a 13.5-mile stretch of coastline and offers a fun and unique way to explore the area.
The beach is shallow and gently sloping, making it generally safe for swimming. However, visitors should always check the tide times and stay aware of the sea conditions. In 2024, Dymchurch beach received a Seaside Award from Keep Britain Tidy, but in 2025, concerns over water quality resulted in a 'no swim' warning.
There is a large promenade running along the back of the beach, ideal for walking, scooting, or enjoying the sea views. The beach has a decent-sized pay-and-display car park close by, as well as public toilets and accessible areas along the promenade.
Dogs are allowed on Dymchurch Beach, but with some restrictions. From 1st May to 30th September, dogs are not permitted on the main beach area near the centre of the village between 10am and 6pm. Outside of those times, and in the quieter stretches to either side of the main beach, dogs are usually allowed.
Dymchurch North Beach is adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk.
