Littlestone-on-Sea is a resort beach located in the middle of a 16-mile stretch of beach in Hythe Bay, Kent. The bay stretches from Folkestone down to the headland of Dungeness. The bathing water is characterised by a steeply shelving shingle bank with sand dunes at the southern edge. At low tide, wide shallow sand and mud flats are exposed, resulting in a long distance to the sea. The water can appear cloudy at times due to fine sediments suspended in the water column.
The beach at Littlestone is largely shingle above the shoreline, with wooden groynes disappearing into the sea. However, when the tide goes out, a vast expanse of rippled sand is revealed. The beach is lined with coloured beach huts, and there is a large grassy area behind them. Facilities in the village across the road include a few shops and cafes. There is also a lifeboat station and an outfall at the southern edge of the beach, while the New Romney Main Sewer outfall is situated at the northern edge.
Littlestone Beach offers a range of activities, including walking, kite flying, and beachcombing. The long, flat expanse of the beach makes it ideal for these pursuits. On clear days, the views across the English Channel are wide and uninterrupted, making it a great spot for photography. The beach is also popular with anglers, and sea fishing is a common activity. Visitors can also explore the remains of a Mulberry Harbour from WW2, which are visible at low tide.
The Littlestone Golf Club is located nearby, and the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, a famous miniature steam railway, runs through the area. The Littlestone Sailing Club offers opportunities for water-based activities, including dinghy sailing and windsurfing. The beach is also used occasionally by paddleboarders and kayakers.
Littlestone Beach is adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk.
